Why is what we choose to eat so important?

Each time we eat is an opportunity to shape our health for the better.

The foods we eat can determine whether we play into, reverse or fight disease, aging and hormonal issues.

I want you to shift your mindset and start seeing food as information to your genes vs. solely for energy.

Plain and simple: Your body is made up of cells; proteins and fats. Carbohydrates are fuel for these cells.

In order to function optimally, we need to fuel our bodies with macronutrients: proteins, fats and carbohydrates (along with fibre and water)

Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. You need micronutrients: vitamins and minerals, to encourage hormonal balance, balance blood sugar, boost energy, neutralize free radicals and to promote proper digestion.

People are always so quick to blame genetics for their health issues. While genetics will always play a role, what about epigenetics? This refers to your gene expression being determined on the environment you put them in.

As soon as food touches our mouth, communication happens within our body, delivering messages like “release this hormone!” or “trigger immune cells”.

Unfortunately, when you consume highly processed food, a type of mimicry takes place. These artificial foods try to fit into the receptor sites where natural foods should be going, which starts to activate genetic expression for problems (not to mention damage to our guts, where over 70% of our immune system is located).

There is not one specific diet that works for everyone, but I will always recommend eating more whole food based options.
