Consuming more magnesium rich foods (raw cacao being the highest whole food source of magnesium) can greatly benefit you whether you are on the birth control pill or are dealing with PMS, infertility, painful periods, or pregnancy!

Why?

Magnesium levels fluctuate during a woman’s cycle. 

Magnesium is necessary in the function of metabolism and breakdown of estrogen. 

It’s simple: The higher the estrogen or progesterone, the lower the magnesium. 

During the second half of the menstrual cycle, when both estrogen and progesterone are elevated, magnesium levels drop – which normally results in symptoms like headaches and/or PMS.

How can adequate amounts of magnesium help you rebalance your hormones?

Magnesium can reduce stress levels and calm your nervous system by regulating cortisol.

Magnesium supports the thyroid (master gland of metabolism) as it is essential for the production of thyroid hormone.

Magnesium taken before bed allows a more restful sleep. I cannot stress how important adequate sleep is to overall health. Without proper sleep, your hormones will NOT be in balance.

A magnesium deficiency can result in irritability, headaches, PMS, insomnia, anxiety, depression, thyroid dysfunction etc. 

Be aware of things that deplete you of magnesium:

  • Processed foods
  • Smoking and high alcohol consumption
  • Environmental toxins
  • Stress
  • Excess calcium (Many people deplete their magnesium stores through supplementation with solely calcium. Calcium cannot be utilized/absorbed without magnesium)

Recipe for Chocolate Bark

Ingredients:

1/2 cup of organic coconut oil/ghee

1 cup of organic raw cacao powder

A handful of almonds, walnuts, goji berries, pumpkin seeds and coconut chips!

Instructions:

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a large mixing bowl, add raw cacao powder

On the stove, melt 1/2 cup of coconut oil/ghee on low heat until melted

Pour the melted coconut/ghee into the large mixing bowl and stir until completely mixed

Spread out the mixture on the lined baking sheet and sprinkle with toppings! (I choose almonds, walnuts, goji berries, pumpkin seeds and coconut chips!)

Set the pan in the refrigerator to cool until fully set, at least an hour.

Break apart the bark into pieces and try not to devour it all at once!
